FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Zilker 351 Announces First Executive Director to Advance Stewardship and Community Connections in Zilker Park.
AUSTIN, TX – [2/20/2025] – Zilker 351, the nonprofit conservancy formed in 2022 to enhance the long-term sustainability and stewardship of the 351-acre Zilker Park is proud to announce the appointment of Fleetwood Jacobs as its first Executive Director. This newly established leadership position marks a pivotal moment for the emerging nonprofit, emphasizing its resolute dedication to “honor, preserve and enhance the natural, cultural, and recreational treasures of 351-acre Zilker Metropolitan Park for all.”Jacobs, a seasoned nonprofit leader, brings extensive experience in conservation, fundraising, and public engagement. Previously, as Development Director for Hill Country Conservancy, she led fundraising efforts, community programming, volunteer initiatives, and marketing for the well-established environmental nonprofit. Now, she aims to position Zilker 351 as a trusted advocate for Zilker Park’s ecological integrity while upholding Andrew Zilker’s vision that the park “ought to belong to all the people of Austin.”
Why Zilker Park Matters Now
Zilker Park is at a critical crossroads. As Austin's population surges, the park faces increasing pressure from heavy foot traffic, ecological degradation, and infrastructure strain. Furthermore, Zilker Park’s need for upkeep has outpaced its dedicated public funding. Therefore, restoring the park to its optimal ecological health while ensuring the continued access and enjoyment of its 3 million visitors a year is a matter of vital importance. Under Jacobs’ leadership, Zilker 351 is aiming to bridge these gaps to ensure a sustainable future for Austin’s most beloved community park.
A Clear Commitment to the Community
Zilker 351 is dedicated to making measurable impacts in Zilker Park by:
Investing in park restoration – Committing to ecological improvements throughout the park which will improve water quality and infiltration, mitigate urban heat, and enhance park users’ enjoyment.
Engaging the community – Hosting community listening sessions, educational programs, and hands-on volunteer days to invite all Austinites to participate in the care of their park.
Strengthening partnerships – Working closely with the City of Austin and the 15 organizations operating in Zilker Park to align priorities and care for the “in-between” spaces of the park that are not are not currently under dedicated management.
Zilker 351’s Board Chair, Mike Cannatti said, “Fleetwood is passionate about environmental stewardship and community engagement, and she has impressive experience with the skills that Zilker 351 will need to move forward with our work to honor, preserve, and enhance the natural, cultural, and recreational treasures of the 351-acre Zilker Metropolitan Park for all.
